I finally got another assignment today, and I binged the entire thing and finished it. I think I’m genuinely addicted to the dopamine from doing assignments. I ended up doing a super cool quirky SQL injection using SQLMAP, along with a custom tamper script to do something incredibly sick. Because of this convoluted mess, I ended up fully circumventing having to decode my flag, which I genuinely don’t know how to decode. But that was fun regardless!

R – 3 breaths

E – I met P, who’s living with S and L next year and they didn’t hear me introducing myself to them. I guess it kinda felt like that was symbolic of me being eventually replaced by someone new, as they’re most likely going to do things like bake together which I had asked if I could join (didn’t happen).

S – I know that this is strongly fueled by insecurity, so I don’t want to give it too much weight; that being said I also should not put all my eggs in one basket and be ok with the thought of being not as close as I thought. I don’t think it’s a terrible thing, and I feel like it’d be kind of clingy to expect this before it happens. Regardless I know that a lot of things can be attributed to other non-malicious things, but it’s still fine to feel somewhat upset.

T – Invest in other areas also and make sure to foster several different avenues of connection. Also talk to therapist about this on Monday lol. Love you!

The Darkness Beneath is Fight On!’s community megadungeon. It was one of the early (if not first?), big collaborative megadungeons. Many of the levels are as great today as they were in 2010s.

Each level can either be used stand-alone, repurposed for another dungeon, or used together. As a nice bonus, David Bowman levels form a cohesive underdark setting. Bryce Lynch found many levels to be some of the best adventures in the OSR.

Without further ado, here are the levels and issues they were published in:

“Caribbean sugar plantations constituted the first truly modernized societies in the world where people, mobilized through violence and oppression, were thrust into remarkably industrial settings for their time. The sugar industry also created the economic basis for the European merchant and commercial classes to challenge, gradually, the monolith of the feudal aristocratic order.”

From Dominic Boyer's NO MORE FOSSILS. Here's another bit:

“The automobile has a surprisingly deep and complicated history, one that intertwined with the locomotive for many decades. A rail-less automotive machine was a serious aspiration of inventors no later than the end of the eighteenth century. The locomotive won out for both engineering and infrastructural reasons and was safeguarded by inconvenient legal measures like the British Locomotive Act of 1865 that required non-rail automobiles travel at a maximum speed of four mph and be preceded by a man waving a red flag.”

Personally, I'd love to see a return of the above legislation, but I know I'm in the extreme minority here. Another bit:

“The philosopher Andre Gorz argued back in the 1970s that the class structure of capitalist society was sustained by a phenomenon he termed the 'poverty of affluence.' What he means is that capitalism utilizes scarcity as a means for reproducing social inequality and preserving class heirarchy. New technological achievements and luxuries are enjoyed first only by the elite, which displays them as status symbols to attract the desires of the masses toward them. As the masses gain access to old luxuries, new unattainable luxuries develop to replace them. This treadmill of luxury means that no universal “good life” will ever be enjoyed in a capitalist society.”

One more:

“Green capitalism as a whole is paradoxical. It will never be satisfied by sustainability. What we call capitalism is a metastasizing arrangement of production, trade, rent-seeking, and consumption that constantly fights for more resource usage and technological development. Its hunger is sucropolitical, it thirsts after the sweet taste for more. Its bones and sinews, especially in the rapidly industrializing world, are still surprisingly carbopolitical, driven by machines and coal toward relentless production of more things. Its epidermis is petropolitical, mobile, plastic, ever reshaping itself in response to technology, desire, and fashion.”

If you want others to listen, try BLUF'ing.

US military professionals are trained to start their emails with the BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) because it grabs attention and makes the message clear and concise.

Figure out what you want to say (your bottom line) and say it first.

  • If you want your reader to take action, state the action up front.
  • If you're about to give a 5-min overview that requires no action, say that.
  • If you're recommending a solution, share your recommendation first and then supporting research.
  • If you overperformed or underperformed, start with that message.

But here's the hard part: What is your bottom line, and how do you pick just one?

Your bottom line is what your whole argument boils down to. Ideally, it's short, easy to grasp, and sparks curiosity.

I find it helpful to think about the specific change of mind or behavior I want to incite. It doesn't have to be a life-altering change, but it should be specific and clear.

Why BLUF works:

✨ It quickly answers your reader's top question, “Why should I care?”

✨ It gives the reader context, which makes everything else easier to understand.

✨ It helps you cut content that doesn't support your bottom line, resulting in more impact with fewer words.

— Credit: Lisa Cron's book, Wired for Story, helped me articulate the three whys above (bulleted with stars). I highly recommend it!

Two months ago, I re-injured my bicep tendon by pushing myself a little too much in my workout routine, and it was made worse as I ignore the pain due to being in denial. This was an injury that I sustained last year around the same time, and it took a few months before I was able to do my normal activities.

I’ve been rehabbing the injury the past 60-days, and I’m a lot better than before, but not out of the woods yet. I’d say that the pain is consistently a 1 out of 10, but it can flare up a little depending on the activity. This same thing happened to me last year, and it wasn’t until eight or so months after the initial injury that I was 100% healed.

I’m still recovering, but I have decided to take one private jiu-jitsu lesson a week! I’m really excited about that, and we are extra careful not to aggravate anything. It has been good for my mental health!

Took a Private BJJ Lesson

Last year, I started BJJ about two months into the recovery of this same injury. I’d have to ice and massage my shoulder after classes, and was always extra careful. Sometimes it would flare up quite a bit, and I’d have to cut back on the number of classes for that week, but I managed it well, and soon it didn’t give me any issue.

This time around, the one thing I’ve been trying to do is get back to a point where I could participate in BJJ again. I was extremely frustrated, board line depressed, at the timing of my injury because it sort of derailed that entire plan.

But my shoulder has felt better the past few weeks (despite minor setbacks). I decided to try getting back into BJJ, but slowly.

Last Saturday, I took a private lesson from the gym that I left. I’ve been communicating with them since my injury, and they were very supportive, answered my questions, encouraged me, and offered up solutions to help me out. It was really above and beyond. Quite frankly, it wasn’t like anything I’d experienced at any of the other gyms that I tried since leaving.

The private class went well, but I’m still not quite ready for action. I have other priorities to take care of right now, so that will give me an opportunity to rest for about another month. Once that’s done, I’ll begin incorporating classes again at a Gracie Jiu-jitsu certified training center.

I have long been a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, though the intensity of my obsession has varied over the years. Unlike S.T. Yoshi of Dark Regions Press, I am definitely not aa scholar of things Lovecraftian. However, when I encountered, purely by the random vicissitudes of fate, a copy of Edgar Allen Poe's “Selected Works”, I immediately bought it.

As is well know, Lovecraft was deeply influenced by Poe, to the degree that the former mentions the latter in some of his own stories. I have read some opinions that claim Lovecraft should not have done so, being a master author of the weird in his own right. I, on the other hand, see something respectful and decent in such acknowledgements. Also, it was these very acknowledgements that led me to the opening page of Poe himself. Selected Works of Edgar Allen Poe contains a number of his more well-known short stories, “The Fall of the House of Usher” among them, as well as numerous poems from his pen. The errors that were in Poe's original publications, that is typos and the like, have all been retained to maintain the spirit of the author's original works. I agree with this editorial decision, as such errors do not intrude on the reading pleasure at all.

Poe writes in often very long sentences packed with information, and this makes rushing the reading difficult, at least for me. These are stories that one needs to savour like a fine wine. Poe is not cheap, cask wine to be quaffed by the gallon. Each word seems to have its place and some of the phrases are unusual enough to modern eyes that one needs to think about it more than one would in a modern work. The overall feel of Poe's writing is one steeped in the time to which the man was born. Remembering that is important in such tales as “A Tale of Unparalelled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall”, where modern readers will instantly find issue with Poe's speculations of the mysterious (at the time) moon.

Right from the beginning, Poe's influence on Lovercraft can be discerned. The style of narrative, such as a letter or document left to explain the character's side of the story (“William Wilson”), stands as an example of this. There is also the influence of themes that Lovecraft picked up in his stories, such as individual transformation, as what occurs in “Ligeia” to the beloved of the narrator. For fans of Lovecraft, this makes reading Poe almost essential to appreciate the continuity maintained by the latter.

For enjoyment in reading, Selected Works of Edgar Allen Poe makes a fine introduction to Poe's body of work. It is not overwhelming but gives one a taste that may inspire future and deeper dives into Poe's work and world. Definitely a recommended read.

This song came out more than 20 years ago now, so I consider it a #ThrowbackThursday track. It still sounds great today!

I am a little bit of loneliness, a little bit of disregard Handful of complaints, but I can't help the fact that everyone can see these scars I am what I want you to want, what I want you to feel But it's like no matter what I do, I can't convince you, to just believe this is real

So I let go watching you, turn your back like you always do Face away and pretend that I'm not But I'll be here 'cause you're all that I got

I can't feel the way I did before Don't turn your back on me I won't be ignored Time won't heal this damage anymore Don't turn your back on me I won't be ignored ♪ ♫ ♪

This Thursday is definitely a “recovery” day. All the physical work I did yesterday in the alley and on the back fence bushes wore me out. I woke this morning still feeling drained, and sore.

Yesterday I ordered a cordless electric pole saw to use on those tree branches that need to come down. I do have 2 manual pole saw tools, one set up with a saw blade, the other with a snip-style cutter. They both work fine, I've used them in the past. But I no longer have the strength and energy to use them effectively. I certainly couldn't use them to do the work needed in the time allotted me.

Earlier today the cordless electric pole saw arrived. Now I need to get some safety goggles and heavy work gloves to use with the chain saw. Found some on Amazon and ordered them, they should arrive tomorrow. The adventure continues.

As Travis Barker's tattoo says “Can I say?”

I listened to Veronique talk on the phone, and we spoke of writing and reading – what's to like, not like. After the call, I thought of me, it, writing, what there is, isn't.

And a/the conclusion I have: I am “retired”. I love tech, system administration, volunteer work, busyness and day-to-day, and after 30+ years of writing (I started age 8, I am now 40), I am done with the written word.

With it. The big BLITZ of it. The hoo-rah and oom-pah.

parable:

my late-father worked at Chrysler for 35 years. When he retired, he didn't chastize or dislike other Chrysler employees, he didn't stop driving a truck, he just stopped BUILDING TRUCKS. I can/do write on occassion, just as much as my dad drove his truck daily back when – but the force and energy of writinggggg (multiple g's for continuation), has lost flavor.

And this is an attitude/approach to writing – nothing else. If one chews gum until the flavor is gone, you don't owe anything to that piece of gum to keep chewing it. “thanks for the thrills, money is on the table” (ha)

So I feel/am retired. +1 to the tech scene, web developement, system adminstration, Linux (fanboy here, indeed), computer science (and it's long and ever-captivating history), mechanical weaving of hardware and software, engines to transistors, to single board computers to AI. I'll take it all!

May the Web and Smol Web and new horizons (just not the game) win!

#Environnement #TransitionEnergetique #Transports #TransportsEnCommun #TransportsCollectifs
